Here are some traditional events and customs you can enjoy in Japan in August:
🏮 お盆(Obon)
Dates: August 13–16 (varies slightly by region)
Obon is a Buddhist event to honor the spirits of ancestors. Many people return to their hometowns to visit family graves and join in local Bon Odori (Bon dancing) festivals. Streets and temples may be lit up with lanterns.
お盆は、祖先の霊を供養する仏教の行事です。
多くの人が故郷に帰り、家族のお墓参りや盆踊りに参加します。
町や寺では、提灯のあかりがともされます。
🎆 花火大会(Fireworks Festivals)
All throughout August, large fireworks displays are held across Japan. People wear yukata (summer kimono) and enjoy street food at these festive summer events.
8月には、全国各地で花火大会が開かれます。
人々は浴衣を着て、夜空に広がる美しい花火を楽しみます。
屋台の食べ物も人気です。
🎐 夏祭り(Summer Festivals)
Shrines and towns host local festivals with food stalls, games, dancing, and music. Some famous ones include the Awa Odori in Tokushima and Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori (though these may be held earlier in the month).
神社や町では、夏祭りが開かれます。
屋台、金魚すくい、太鼓や踊りなど、にぎやかな雰囲気が魅力です。
徳島の阿波踊りや、青森のねぶた祭りなどが有名です。
🍧 夏の風物詩(Summer Delights)
August is hot and humid, so people enjoy shaved ice (かき氷), cold noodles, and cool drinks. Traditional wind chimes (風鈴) and bamboo screens are also popular to help feel cooler.
