先日、生徒さんから新しいアニメをおすすめされました。その名は『魔王の娘は優しすぎる！！』です。

Recently, my Niko Niko students recommended a new anime to me called “The Demon King’s Daughter is Too Kind!!” (Maou no Musume wa Yasashisugiru!!).

実際に観てみたところ、すぐに大好きになってしまいました！物語の主人公は、魔王の娘・ドゥ。本当はおそろしい存在であるはずなのに、誰に対しても「優しすぎる」女の子なんです。

I watched it and immediately fell in love with it! The story follows Dou, the daughter of the Demon King, who is supposed to be scary but is actually “too kind” to everyone.

今日はこのアニメのタイトルにもなっている「〜すぎる」を学びましょう。

Today, let’s learn the grammar point “~sugiru,” which is even featured in the title of this anime.

[Deep Dive: The Grammar of “~Sugiru” / 「〜すぎる」を勉強しよう]

タイトルの「優しすぎる（Yasashisugiru）」という言葉をみてください。

The title uses the word “Yasashisugiru.”

やさしい (Kind) + すぎる (Too much) = やさしすぎる (Too kind)

日本語では、動詞や形容詞に「〜すぎる」をつけて、「度が過ぎている」「過剰である」ことを表現します。日常会話で毎日使える、とても便利なフレーズです！

In Japanese, we attach “~Sugiru” to verbs and adjectives to express that something is “too much” or “excessive.” It’s a versatile phrase you can use every day!

1. How to Connect it

  • い形容詞 (I-Adjectives): 最後の「い」を取って「すぎる」をつけます。
    • あつい (Hot) → あつすぎる (Atsu-sugiru / Too hot)
    • おいしい (Delicious) → おいしすぎる (Oishi-sugiru / Too delicious!)
  • な形容詞 (Na-Adjectives): そのまま「すぎる」をつけます。
    • べんり (Convenient) → べんりすぎる (Benri-sugiru / Too convenient)
  • 動詞 (Verbs): 「ます形」から「ます」を取って「すぎる」をつけます。
    • たべます (To eat) → たべすぎる (Tabe-sugiru / To overeat)
    • のみます (To drink) → のみすぎる (Nomi-sugiru / To overdrink)

2. Important Nuance: Is it Good or Bad? / ニュアンスのポイント

もともと「〜すぎる」はネガティブな意味（too much）で使われていましたが、現代のカジュアルな日本語では、強い感情を表すためにポジティブな意味でもよく使われます。

Originally, “~Sugiru” was used for negative things, but in modern casual Japanese, we often use it for positive things to show extreme emotion.

  • 可愛すぎる！ (Kawaisugiru!) – It’s so cute I can’t stand it!
  • 嬉しすぎる！ (Ureshisugiru!) – I’m way too happy!

この優しい表現は、日本で人とコミュニケーションを取るのにとても良いフレーズです。少し文法を詳しく見てみましょう。

This gentle expression is a great way to communicate with people in Japan. Let’s look at the grammar a bit more closely:

  • 手伝い (Tetsudai): Help / Assistance
  • お ～ します (O … shimasu): A polite way to say “I will do…” (Humble form)

旅行中だけでなく、仕事の場面でも非常に役に立ちます。例えば、会社で「仕事のやり方が分からない」と言っている同僚や、「コピー機が壊れてしまった」と困っている人がいたら、ぜひ**「お手伝いします」**と声をかけてみてください。

It’s useful not only during travel but also in business situations. For example, if a colleague says, “I don’t know how to do this work,” or if someone is struggling because “the copier is broken,” try saying “Otetsudai shimasu.”

また、相手に手伝いが必要かたずねたいときは、このように言うのがベストです。

If you want to ask if the other person needs help, this is the best way to say it:

「お手伝いしましょうか？」 (Otetsudai shimashou ka?) “Shall I help you?”

日本旅行中に、重いスーツケースを持って困っている人を見かけたら、ぜひこのフレーズを使ってみてください。とても丁寧で、まさにドゥのような「やさしい」気持ちが伝わりますよ！

If you see someone struggling with a heavy suitcase during your trip to Japan, give this phrase a try! It’s very polite and perfectly conveys a “Yasashii” heart, just like Dou!
