梅：百花に先がけて咲く花／Plum Blossoms: The First to Bloom

梅（うめ）は、百花（ひゃっか）に先（さき）がけて花（はな）を咲（さ）かせることから、中国（ちゅうごく）では松（まつ）、竹（たけ）とともに縁起（えんぎ）の良（よ）い植物（しょくぶつ）とされています。

Because they bloom before all other flowers, plum trees are considered symbols of good fortune in China, alongside pine and bamboo.

奈良時代（ならじだい）に大陸（たいりく）から持（も）ち帰（かえ）られた梅（うめ）は、平安時代（へいあんじだい）以降（いこう）、詩歌（しいか）の題材（だいざい）や、梅干（うめぼ）し・薬（くすり）としての利用（りよう）が広（ひろ）まり、日本各地（にほんかくち）で栽培（さいばい）されるようになりました。

The plum was first brought to Japan from mainland Asia during the Nara period. From the Heian period onward, it became a popular subject for poetry, and its use in medicine and as “umeboshi” (pickled plums) led to its cultivation across Japan.

早春（そうしゅん）を彩（いろど）る美（うつく）しい姿（すがた）は農作業（のうさぎょう）の目安（めやす）ともなり、実（み）も利用（りよう）できることから、日本（にほん）の里山（さとやま）に欠（か）かすことのできない花木（かぼく）といえます。

The beautiful sight of plum blossoms coloring the early spring once served as a seasonal guide for farming. Since its fruit is also highly useful, the plum tree remains an essential part of Japan’s “satoyama” (traditional rural landscapes).

春（はる）といったら、「桜（さくら）」を思（おも）い浮（う）かべる人（ひと）が多（おお）いですが、私（わたし）はこの梅（うめ）の花（はな）も大好（だいす）きです。

When people think of spring, many imagine “Sakura” (cherry blossoms), but I also love these plum blossoms very much.

色（いろ）も鮮（あざ）やかですし、梅（うめ）の木（き）の種類（しゅるい）の名前（なまえ）を見（み）るのも楽（たの）しいです。

Their colors are so vivid, and it is also fun to look at the names of the different varieties of plum trees.

もう少しすれば、桜（さくら）の花（はな）も咲（さ）き始（はじ）めますね。花（はな）びらの形（かたち）や花（はな）のつき方（かた）も異（こと）なります。ぜひ、梅（うめ）の花（はな）と桜（さくら）の花（はな）を比（くら）べてみてくださいね。
