日本に遊びに来た生徒さんが、飲み物を注文したときに、 “Hot or cold?” と聞かれたそうです。

One of my students visited Japan and was asked, “Hot or cold?” when ordering a drink. Later, she excitedly told me that she answered: 「冷たいのください!」 I was really happy to hear that.
実は、この生徒さんはもともとたくさんの語彙を知っていて、 「冷たい」も私が教えた言葉ではありませんでした。 自分で知っていた日本語を、実際の場面で使えたんですね。
She already knew a lot of Japanese vocabulary, so “冷たい” was not something I had taught her. She used a word she already knew in a real situation.
その話を聞いて、私は
「cold を聞くと、『寒い』と言いたくなってしまう学習者もいるかもしれない」
と気づきました。
That story made me realize that learners may hear “cold” and automatically think of 寒い.
生徒さんとのレッスンでは、 私自身もいつもたくさんのことに気づかせてもらっています。
My students are always helping me notice new things about how Japanese is learned and used.
