スポーツの「game」は日本語で「ゲーム」?

Sometimes a small word can change the whole feeling of a sentence.

In a writing homework assignment, I asked:

あなたの国では、外でお酒を飲んでもいいですか?
Is it okay to drink alcohol outside in your country?

My student wrote:

スポーツゲームにのんでいいです。

From the sentence, I understood that the student wanted to say that drinking is allowed while watching sports.

In English, “game” works naturally when talking about sports.

But in Japanese, ゲーム often makes people think of video games.

What sounds more natural?

In this context, a more natural way to express the idea is:

スポーツ観戦(かんせん)のときは飲んでもいいです。
You can drink while watching sports.

Here, スポーツ観戦 does not mean that “game” always translates as 観戦.

It is simply a natural way to express the meaning the student was trying to communicate in this context.

It is not only about grammar

Sometimes the grammar is not the main problem.

A sentence can sound much more natural simply by choosing the word or expression that Japanese speakers normally use in that situation.

These small differences are one of the things I enjoy helping students notice. 😊
