How to Say “I Saw a Spider” in Japanese |Miru vs Au vs Sōguu Suru

レッスンで、生徒せいとさんが今日の帰かえりのできごとを話してくれました。

I met a spider on my way home from work.

意味はちゃんと分かります。
でも、少しだけ不自然です。

We can understand the meaning, but 会う is usually used for people.

1. いちばん自然でやさしい言い方

I saw a spider on my way home from work.

動物や虫を見たことを言いたいときは、 見る がいちばん自然で使いやすいです。

If you simply want to say that you saw an animal or insect, 見る is the safest and most natural choice.

2. でも今回は、かなり近かった!

生徒さんに詳しく聞いてみると、

そうです。

That changes the feeling a little.

It was not just “I saw a spider.”
The spider was very close, and it was an unexpected encounter.

そんなときは、

I encountered a spider on my way home from work.

遭遇(そうぐう)する

= to encounter / come across unexpectedly

少しかための表現で、だいたいJLPT N2くらいの語彙です。

It is a more advanced and slightly formal word.

3. 会う・見る・遭遇する

人に会うときに使います。顔と顔を合わせるイメージです。

I met my friend.

動物・虫・物などを「見た」ときに使いやすいです。

I saw a spider.

思いがけず何かに出会ったときに使います。

I encountered a spider.

4. Spider Vocabulary from the Lesson

今回のレッスンでは、蜘蛛の話から語彙も広がりました。

Since the topic came up naturally in class, we also learned some useful spider-related words.

poison / venom

powerful venom

venom / poisonous liquid

spider web

to get caught / get stuck

I got caught in a spider web.

Some spiders have powerful venom.

5. One sentence can grow into a whole lesson

最初は、

という一文でした。

でも、そこから

という表現の違いを学び、さらに

という新しい言葉にも広がりました。今日も楽しいレッスンでしたね!

This is one of the things I love about language learning.

A small sentence can lead to grammar, nuance, vocabulary, and a much deeper understanding of Japanese.
