Hataraku vs Tsutomeru: で or に?

Where Do You Work? 働く vs 勤める — A Small Particle Makes a Big Difference

Natural Japanese Notes | Real Lesson

どこに はたらいていますか?

Almost! 😊

In a recent Japanese lesson, we were practicing the ~ています form.

One of my students wanted to ask:

“Where do you work?”

The student said:

❌ どこに はたらいていますか?

I understood the question immediately. But there’s a small problem with the particle.

Can you find it?

1. 働く(はたらく)— To Work

When we use 働く(はたらく), we normally use で to indicate where someone works.

〇 どこで働いていますか?

Where do you work?

For example:

  • トヨタで働いています。
    I work at Toyota.
  • 学校(がっこう)で働いています。
    I work at a school.
  • 自宅(じたく)で働いています。
    I work from home.

働く + で

Here, で indicates the place or setting where the work takes place.

2. 勤める(つとめる)— To Be Employed By

But did you know there’s another natural way to ask the same question?

〇 どこに勤めていますか?

Where do you work? / What organization do you work for?

For example:

  • トヨタに勤めています。
    I work for Toyota.
  • 日本(にほん)の会社(かいしゃ)に勤めています。
I work for a Japanese company.
  • 銀行(ぎんこう)に勤めています。
    I work for a bank.

勤める + に

勤める focuses on the company or organization you are employed by.

Notice that the particle changes!

3. Same Company, Different Verbs

Let’s compare two sentences:

トヨタで働いています。
I work at Toyota.

トヨタに勤めています。
I am employed by Toyota.

Both are natural Japanese.

The difference is what each verb emphasizes:

VerbParticleMain focus
働く(はたらく)でWorking at a place or for a company
勤める(つとめる)にBeing employed by a company or organization

These are not simply two interchangeable particles.

The verb determines which particle is appropriate.

4. Can We Always Use Both?

Not necessarily!

For example:

〇 自宅(じたく)で働いています。
I work from home.

✕ 自宅(じたく)に勤めています。

We don’t normally use 勤める with 自宅 because a home isn’t an employer.

If you’re self-employed or freelance, 働く may also be more suitable than 勤める.

So remember:

働く + で

勤める + に

And always think about the situation!

5. Your Turn! Create Your Own Japanese Self-Introduction

Now let’s use these expressions in your own introduction.

Enter the name of the company or organization you work for in the practice box below.

You’ll see two Japanese sentences:

[Your company] で働いています。

[Your company] に勤めています。

Read both aloud.

Then try introducing yourself:

はじめまして。
[Your name] です。
[Your company] で働いています。
よろしくお願(おねが)いします。

Nice to meet you. I’m [your name]. I work at [your company].

Can you say it again without looking?

Note: 勤める is for employment with a company or organization. If you are freelance or self-employed, 働く may be more appropriate.
