「かいに いきます」vs「かって いきます」|What’s the Difference?
What’s the Difference?
Last month, one of my students learned the pattern 〜
I go to buy a drink.
Then, in today’s lesson, this sentence appeared:
Shall I buy something to drink and bring it with me?
They look very similar, but the meaning is different.
I go to buy bread.
Here, the purpose of going somewhere is to buy bread.
This pattern means:
go to do something
I go to see a movie.
I go to eat.
I go to buy clothes.
I’ll buy bread and take it with me.
Here, you buy the bread first.
Then, you go somewhere.
This pattern can mean:
do something first, then go
I’ll buy some drinks and take them with me.
I’ll make lunch and take it with me.
I’ll take an umbrella with me.
3. Why do we say 「
In today’s lesson, this sentence was used after someone was invited to a party.
Shall I buy something to drink and bring it with me?
The speaker is not going out only to buy a drink.
First, they buy the drink.
Then, they go to the party.
They bring the drink with them.
That is why かって いきましょうか? is natural here.
4. Compare
I go to buy a drink.
→ The purpose of going is to buy the drink.
I buy a drink first and then go.
→ I take the drink with me.
= go to do something
= do something first, then go
5. The form is different too
The meaning is different, but the verb form is also different.
This uses the ます-form.
This uses the て-form.

Small difference, big meaning
They look similar, but the order of the actions is different.
go → buy
buy → go
When you imagine the order of the actions, the difference becomes much easier to understand.
