Japanese Nouns + する:
Can You Use する with Any Noun?

「名詞+する」は便利!
でも、どんな名詞にも使えるの?

✔ 勉強べんきょうするto study
✔ 料理りょうりするto cook
✕ 学校がっこうするunnatural

Why can some Japanese nouns combine with する, while others cannot?

名詞 + する: A Handy Japanese Pattern!

One useful feature of Japanese is that many nouns can combine with する to form verbs.

For example, once you learn 勉強べんきょう (study), you can use 勉強べんきょうする (to study).

But can you add する to any noun?

Not quite!

Can Every Noun Combine with する?

No! Ordinary nouns naming places or physical objects generally cannot combine directly with する.

✕ 学校がっこうする ✔ 学校がっこうに行いく — go to school
✕ 本ほんする ✔ 本ほんを読よむ — read a book
✕ 花はなする ✔ 花はなを育そだてる — grow flowers
✕ 机つくえする ✔ 机つくえを使つかう — use a desk

Even a noun related to an action doesn’t always work. For example, 走はしり refers to running, but we normally say 走はしる, not 走りする.

💡 Remember: The meaning of a noun gives you a clue, but you also need to learn which combinations are natural in Japanese.
1

Actions & Activities

Start here if you’re a beginner!

Many nouns describing actions or activities can combine with する. Think of nouns that have an action inside them.

This is a useful first rule, although it doesn’t work for every noun.

勉強べんきょうするto study
料理りょうりするto cook
掃除そうじするto clean
練習れんしゅうするto practice
相談そうだんするto consult
交渉こうしょうするto negotiate

Final Thoughts

When you first learn Japanese, action nouns + する is a helpful starting point.

But as your Japanese improves, you’ll discover that する verbs can express much more than actions.

The key is not to add する to every noun. Instead, learn which combinations are natural and how they work in context.
